The Truth About Stress
Stress serves an important function in our lives, it helps keep our bodies ready to respond in any situation. It prepares us to deal with things that threaten us. But too much stress can have devastating effects on our physical and mental well being.
How Stress Helps Us
Our bodies are a miracle of design. In a healthy, properly aligned body, when a threat is perceived, the sympathetic nervous system activates engaging the “fight or flight” response. Heart rate accelerates, pupils dilate, digestion decreases, bronchial passages widen and blood pressure raises, all in preparation to face whatever threat is presented to us. Once the threat is averted, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over and we return to the neutral “rest and digest” state so the body can attend to the life sustaining subconscious processes of digestion, healing and repair.
Where Things Go Awry
For this ingenious design to work the way it is supposed to, our bodies must be properly aligned and for our bodies to be properly aligned they NEED to be upright. But, in the modern world we are oriented to a life of sitting which creates bodies that lack the structural strength needed to remain in a restful state when we are upright. The deep structural muscles get habituated into sitting patterns, so that when we stand up, those core muscles do not properly engage and our bodies expend a lot of effort constantly compensating. This active compensation actually increases our nervous system stress!
In that state, when faced with real threats (traffic, arguments, financial loss, etc.) the nervous system activates the “fight or flight” response as it is designed to, but when the threat is over, instead of returning to a restful neutral state, the nervous system remains in a habituated pattern of an increased baseline level of stress ALL THE TIME, and this baseline stress is so familiar we don’t even notice it.
How The Body Foundations Program can help?
You may have had some success in relieving stress through yoga, meditation, breathing exercises or even therapy, but there’s a good chance that while those practices have helped some, you can’t seem to carry those positive effects consistsently into your everyday life.

The body foundation program daily exercises gently allow the body to realign to a more neutral position in relation to gravity. What I have gotten and get from the body foundations program? First and foremost is direction with what seems to be the brains and science behind it. Part of what makes the body foundations programs so attractive is how very easy, very low key, and simple they are. They’re the easiest thing in the world to do. Often it feels like there’s so much to learn and so many challenges to deal with already in life and the Loving Your Core program is like this incredibly lovely respite from all this. As I feel through the different movements, I notice how good my body feels at different times when the alignment exercises find their sweet spots and my body has that deep sense of pleasure and all the good feelings it evokes. My internal space has shifted significantly. I think this is probably one of the most profound and important aspects of the body foundations program. Experiencing my own body in a new way creates an unusual capacity to create shifts in my internal space, my mental, emotional and psychological environment, all from realigning and resetting my physical body.
It’s as if my body is very much a clear mirror for my inner mechanisms of mind, and by resetting and realigning my body to return to its natural flow state, I also reset and realign my mind to its own natural flow state.
